It’s the Division G Championships at RESC!

Swimmers — Divisional swimmers should arrive at Regency at 6:25 a.m. sharp on Saturday. We will be in the water at 6:40 a.m. The meet starts at 8 a.m., an hour earlier than usual. Be ready to SWIM FAST!!

Parents — Please drop your kids off and then exit our lot and park on Gainsborough or Deborah. Only permitted vehicles can park in our lot on Saturday.

Remember how, early in the season, we told you that hosting divisionals was a very big deal and that we’d need all hands on deck? Well, the time has come. We very, very much need volunteers in key positions. All Swim Team families, as well as students seeking SSL hours, are welcome. Here’s where we need help:

**Concessions — Our three extraordinary concessionaires, Helene, Shiva and Corinne, work exceptionally hard throughout the season to feed and hydrate us, and, in the process, bring in a tremendous amount of money for the team.  We need to give them plenty of help this weekend as we expect large crowds. Please contact me ASAP to volunteer to help with concessions.

**Parking — We need one volunteer to join Tim McClive in managing parking on Saturday morning. Each visiting team has received a limited number of parking permits. We need to ensure that only permitted cars enter the lot and that all others are directed to nearby street parking. Parking attendants will need to be in place by 6 a.m. Saturday.

**Pool Set-Up –- We will be setting up the pool this Friday evening at 7 p.m. This will include removing the two lower diving boards and setting up the six team areas. Please let me know if you can stop by and help.

**Shade Structures — If you have a shade structure, please throw it in your car and bring it along. Please let me know if you have one that we can use.

As always, please remember that if you’re at the pool, you’re a volunteer. We’ll try to match you with your dream volunteer job, but mostly, we’ll just get ya where we need ya! Thanks to the following folks who have volunteered to serve as officials and in other capacities in the meet:

1. Rob Doherty – starter

2. Tim Stewart – stroke and turn

3.  John Thomas – automation

4. Elise Jaffe – awards

5. Angela Tranquill – clerk of course

6. Barry Levy and Diane Wright- announcers

7. Audrey Phillips, Michael Tranquill, and Alessandra Bloch – timers

At the meet this weekend, Denise Bush will staff an Action Accents booth, selling all sorts of fun swim-related gear. We receive 20% of all sales, so stop by and shop!

A very special thank you to the parents who selflessly volunteered to spend the night at the pool on Friday night to prevent any mischief or mishap.

Pep Rally is THURSDAY this week

Our final pep rally of the season will take place THURSDAY evening, July 21.  This is a pot-luck event -– all Swim & Dive Team families are welcome and everyone should bring a pasta dish or side/salad.

Swim & Dive Banquet is Sunday

The Swim & Dive Team Banquet will be held on Sunday, July 24, at Regency. You must sign up on the bulletin board TODAY and pay in advance. Please leave your check made out to Dede Rutberg in the pool office. We cannot accept walk-ins on Sunday.

RESC gear

Everyone should have their team T-shirts and the gear they ordered. If you are missing any items, please let me know. We do have additional deck crew T-shirts, Regency baseball caps, pinnies, and team T’s available for sale. If you still owe for your stuff, now’s the time to pay up!

Photos

Photos of our swimmers taken at meets and events, as well as our team photo, are posted on our web site along with meet results (http://rescswimpool.org/category/swim-meet-results-pictures/).  All photos are downloadable for free.  If you have any pictures to contribute to the gallery, please contact Deb Lindsey at deblindseyphoto@yahoo.com.

Great weekend for the Sailfish!

Wow! What a weekend!  Here’s a note from Jason and the other coaches:

What an unbelievable weekend for all of our Regency Swimmers. I, along with Travis, Erin, and Laurence, could not be more proud of every one of our kids. The atmosphere at our dual meet yesterday was unreal. We showed the spirit and energy that make Regency the BEST team in all of MCSL. That same spirit carried over to Relay Carnival this morning and the results could not have been better. Tons of best times. Tons of people stepping up and giving a little bit extra in order for Regency to come out on top. With 9 relays winning (and the potential for a 10th), we are sending almost HALF the relays from our division. Not to mention, we are 3-1 AND got 1st place at Relay Carnival. We are in great position to finish the season next weekend with a big win over Robin Hood and head into Divisionals!  Congrats to every swimmer! Keep up the hard work. … Jason

Here are the winning relays from Relay Carnival.  These swimmers automatically qualify for MCSL All-Star Relays:

1)     Girls 14 & Under Graduated Free: Beth Wright, Katie Wright, Hannah Lindsey, Malia Bush – NEW TEAM RECORD 1:52.04

2)     Mixed 15-18 Free: Adam Watkins, Laurence Bloch, Eric Shiang, Nicole Marders

3)     Mixed 8 & Under Free: Noah Rutberg, Haley Phillips, Ryan Schricker, Alison Kaiser

4)     Mixed 11-12 Free: Jake Wheatley, Nino Tranquill, Katie Wright, Megan Roche

5)     Boys 14 & Under Graduated Medley: Gaoxing Cosgrove, Nino Tranquill, Paolo Tranquill, Noah Rutberg

6)     Girls 14 & Under Graduated Medley: Hannah Lindsey, Caroline Wallerstedt, Katie Wright, Malia Bush

7)     Girls 11-12 Medley: Emily Thomas, Megan Roche, Katie Wright, Lindsey Levy

8)     Girls 13-14 Medley: Hannah Lindsey, Caitlin Doherty, Nikki Roche, Victoria Wheatley

9)     Girls18 & Under 250 Crescendo Free: Malia Bush, Katie Wright, Laurence Bloch, Hannah Lindsey, Beth Wright

There is the potential to get a 10th relay qualified for All-Stars if our Girls Open Medley can achieve the top time in the division over the last 2 weeks.

Individual All-Stars

The following RESC swimmers have All-Star Individual rankings. The top 16 MCSL swimmers in each event qualify for Individual All-Stars, with each swimmer allowed to swim a maximum of 2 events at the All-Star meet.

·         Laurence Bloch: Free (50th), Fly (46th)

·         Malia Bush: Free (11th), Back (6th), Breast (15th)

Sign up for the season’s final B meet

The sign-up sheet for Wednesday’s home B meet against Chevy Chase Rec will be posted Sunday and will remain up until 5:30 p.m. Tuesday. Be sure to sign up by then! Younger swimmers, swimmers who are unsure about their legality in a given stroke, and swimmers who have been DQ’d this season should ask the coaches which events they should swim for each B meet. If your swimmer’s name does not appear on the sign-up sheet, please talk to Jason or Travis.  Please do not write him/her in on the sheet. Swimmers should be at the pool at 4:45 p.m. on Wednesday.

Team photo rescheduled

Last Friday’s pep rally was rained out, so Deb Lindsey will be taking the team picture at our pep rally on Friday, July 15.  All swimmers should try to attend and should wear their Regency swimsuit.

We’re going bowling!

On July 15, we’ll be bowling from 1:30-3:30 p.m. at Bowl 300 on Shady Grove Road. The cost will be $20.00 per person, which includes shoes, games, snacks, and sodas. RSVP to jonibobby@verizon.net or on the bulletin board sign-up sheet. Payment must be received by Monday, July 11. When you RSVP or sign up, please include your children’s name(s), age(s), and whether they have a ride, need a ride, or have space to offer someone a ride.

Tuesday practice changes

To accommodate the swimmers and coaches going to the Coaches Long Course Invitational on Tuesday evening, we will be combining Tuesday afternoon practices into a single session from 4:30-5:30 p.m. for all age groups. So try to make it to the morning practice that day if you can!

Coaches Long Course meet is Tuesday at Rockville

Congratulations to the following Regency swimmers for making Tuesday’s Coaches Long Course Invitational. This meet takes the top 8 swimmers in each event (and the 9th and 10th swimmers as alternates) and doubles the distance for a very exciting and entertaining night of swimming. You can only qualify in Weeks 1-3 which makes it especially difficult to be selected for this meet.  Congratulations to:

·         Malia Bush: 50 Free (8th), 50 Breast (1st alternate – 9th)

·         Alison Kaiser: 50 Free (1st alternate – 9th)

·         Hannah Lindsey: 100 Free (4th), 100 Back (1st)

·         Haley Phillips: 50 Free (6th), 50 Back (8th)

·         Noah Rutberg: 50 Fly (6th)

·         Katie Wright: 100 Free (8th)

The Coaches Long Course Meet will be held at the Rockville Municipal Swim Center on Tuesday, July 12, with a start time of 6:00 pm. The facility will be open at 4:30. Warmups are as follows:  8 & under, 5:00-5:10 (lanes 2&7 for sprints the whole time), 9-10 and 11-12, 5:10-5:30 (lanes 2&7 for sprints the whole time), and 13-14 and 15-18, 5:30-5:50 (lanes 2&7 for sprints the whole time).  Good luck Regency swimmers!!

RESC Mini-Meet is Sunday

All 8-and-under swimmers are invited to take part in the RESC Mini-Meet on Sunday, July 17, 2011!  Swimmers need not be swim team members to participate. Non-swim team members may participate in up to 3 swimming events; swim team members can swim up for up to 3 events in which they did not finish first or second in an A meet. And there will be games for all! The kids have lots of fun, experience the excitement of a swim meet, and receive a ribbon for participating!  The cost is $5 per swimmer. Additional information is attached to this message. You must sign up by Wednesday, July 13, 2011.

Parent Swim Meet?

We have the opportunity to turn the tables on our kids! Imagine a meet at which the parents swim and the kids time, start, announce, etc. We’re gauging interest in a Parent Swim Meet on the morning of Sunday, July 24 (before the pool opens). If you ARE a parent and ARE interested in swimming in a Parent Meet, please let Dede Rutberg know at rutbergd@mail.nih.gov.

Payments for RESC gear are due

Many of you have received caps and gear this season for which payment remains due. Please leave your check made out to RESC in the pool office, or give me a check or cash, by next Wednesday. If you are unsure how much you owe, please send me an e-mail.

Meet photos

Photos of our swimmers taken at meets and events are posted on our web site along with meet results (http://rescswimpool.org/category/swim-meet-results-pictures/). We are very fortunate to have exceptionally talented parent photographers snapping pix of our kids. The photos are free and downloadable, so go look for your superstar! If you have any pictures to contribute to the gallery, please contact Deb Lindsey at deblindseyphoto@yahoo.com.

Parent volunteers

Please continue to sign up for the deck crew jobs you love in advance of the meets.  You can sign up for a specific job on the bulletin board or online at http://www.signupgenius.com/go/2011591.  We can also put to work middle or high school students who want to earn SSL hours.

A Meet against King Farm

On Saturday we swim against the King Farm Screamin’ Geese, at their pool. The caravan leaves Regency at 7:45 a.m.; please be at the pool (300 Saddle Ridge Circle in Rockville) by 8:10 a.m. This is the biggest meet of the season so far, so we need everyone to rest up on Friday, get to bed early, and get to the meet on time. If anyone listed on the A-Meet lineup can’t swim, I need to know ASAP.

Relay Carnival is Sunday at King Farm

The Sailfish will be back at the King Farm pool on Sunday for the Division G Relay Carnival, which starts at 8 a.m. (an hour earlier than a typical A meet). This is another super important meet at which we can do very well. Relay teams are comprised of 4 or more swimmers and if one person is missing the entire relay team can’t swim. If anyone on the Relay Carnival lineup cannot be at the meet on Sunday morning, I need to know ASAP so we can make the necessary changes and notify the swimmers. On Sunday, there is limited warm-up time at Relay Carnival, so we’ll have an optional team warm-up at Regency from 6:40 – 7:10 a.m. The caravan leaves Regency at 7:20 a.m.

There are two really fun relays at the end of Relay Carnival –a parents’ relay and a coaches’ relay. Congratulations to the RESC Parent Relay Team members (chosen by lottery, not necessarily by seed times): Jordan Rutberg, Michael Tranquil, Javier Jimenez Meral, and Andrea Herman. Both the parent and the coaching teams are in rigorous and intensive workouts, or they should be.  When you see them, encourage them to greatness! Lunch after Relay Carnival will be at Fuddruckers on Rockville Pike.

Coaches Long Course Invitational is Tuesday at Rockville

You can only qualify in Weeks 1-3, which makes it especially difficult to be selected for this meet.

Six RESC swimmers qualify for MCSL Coaches Long Course meet!

Six Regency swimmers have qualified for next Tuesday’s MCSL Coaches Long Course Invitational! This meet takes the top 8 swimmers in each event (and the 9th and 10th swimmers as alternates), based on times achieved during the first three “A” meets.

Haley Phillips

Because swimmers in the Coaches Long Course meet are allowed to swim only two events, a few swimmers beyond the top 8 make it into the meet on scratches. The meet is held at the Rockville Municipal Swim Center’s 50-meter pool, and in each event the competitors swim twice the distance they normally would swim in an MCSL meet. It all makes for a very exciting and entertaining night of swimming by the best young swimmers in Montgomery County.

Congratulations to the following RESC swimmers who qualified for the meet; they are listed with their seeds in their events:

*Noah Rutberg: 8 & Under Boys 50 Fly (6th)
*Malia Bush: 8 & Under Girls 50 Free (8th), 50 Breast (1st alternate — 9th)
*Alison Kaiser: 8 & Under Girls 50 Free (1st alternate — 9th)
*Haley Phillips: 8 & Under Girls 50 Free (6th), 50 Back (8th)
*Katie Wright: 11-12 Girls 100 Free (8th)
*Hannah Lindsey: 13-14 Girls 100 Free (4th), 100 Back (1st)

-

The Rockville Municipal Swim Center is at 355 Martins Lane in Rockville. The Coaches Long Course Invitational will be at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, July 12. Pool opens at 4:30 p.m.; warm-ups begin at 5 p.m. Come support your Sailfish swimmers as they take on the county’s best!

Practice schedule for July 4 and July 5

There will be ONLY morning practice only on Monday, July 4 — there will be NO afternoon practice that day. There will be NO morning practice on Tuesday, July 5 — there will be ONLY afternoon practices on Tuesday. See how we’re freeing you up for an evening of fireworks!?

The Sailfish: Still undefeated!

We’re an awesome 3-0 in the 2011 season with a victory over Olney Mill today! Special congratulations to Haley Phillips and Caroline Wallerstedt, each of whom broke a long-standing RESC team record. Haley took down Grace Whiteis’ 1973 record in 8 & Under Girls 25 Back, while Caroline topped C.J. Lockman’s record in 9-10 Girls 25 Breast, which had stood since 1976. Incredible job, girls!

Sign up for Wednesday’s B meet

The sign-up sheet for swimmers and parents for Wednesday’s B meet (a home meet vs. Potomac Glen) will be up Sunday and will remain in place until 5:30 p.m. Tuesday. Be sure to sign up by then! Younger swimmers, swimmers who are unsure about their legality in a given stroke, and swimmers who have been DQ’d this season should ask the coaches which events they should swim for each B meet. We’re going to the movies

On Friday, July 8, we’ll be going to the movies for opening day of “Zookeeper” at the Rockville Regal theater. The time will be about 2 p.m. (subject to the theater’s schedule). Please sign up on the bulletin board for tix and car pools. On July 15, we’ll be bowling from 1:30-3:30 p.m. at Bowl 300 on Shady Grove Road. More info to come on the bowling outing.

If you are unsure how much you owe, please send me an e-mail. Also, if you ordered a Divisionals T-shirt, your payment for that is due to me no later than Wednesday. Remember, checks for Divisionals T’s should be made out to WMST.

Parents’ Social Hour

Stop by the pool on Tuesday, July 5, at 7 p.m. for a casual social hour with other Swim Team parents. Bring a beverage, a snack if you’d like, and perhaps some bug spray. See you there!

Team picture to be taken Friday, July 8

Red vs. Black B meet Wednesday

Tomorrow’s B meet will be an all-Regency Red & Black intra-squad meet. Actually, it will be a GIRLS VS. BOYS intra-squad meet! Here’s the plan: Girls wear red; boys wear black. We will swim this just like a normal meet. The winning team will be determined by the percentage of best times achieved. The winning team gets a frozen confection, will play an exclusive game of water polo or beaver against the coaches at our next Friday practice, and can “decorate the coaches” — think nails, hair, clothing — at Friday’s pep rally. All swimmers should be at the pool by 5 p.m. for warm-ups.

Some have asked about kickboard races in tomorrow’s meet.  Unfortunately, we will not be doing that at this week’s meet, but watch for the Regency Mini-Meet on July 17, for a full agenda of 8-and-under competition, including kickboard races.

Parents: Please sign up for a volunteer position TODAY. If your child is swimming, you are a volunteer! It makes the meet run longer if we have to organize volunteers at the meet. We’ll need all hands on deck tomorrow night as we must fill all of the volunteer slots ourselves. If you can’t make it to the pool or online to sign up today, sign up by e-mailing Jodie at jodieo@ozatalar.net.

Reminders for all B meets

(1.) Younger swimmers, swimmers who are unsure about their legality in a given stroke, and swimmers who have been DQ’d this season should ask the coaches which events they should swim for each B meet. (2.) If your swimmer’s name does not appear on the sign-up sheet, please talk to Jason or Travis. Please do not write him/her in on the sheet.

A meet absences

Please be sure to sign the A meet absence sheet by Wednesday morning if your swimmer will not be able to compete in this Saturday’s A meet.   This is extremely important!

Upcoming social events

On Friday, July 8, we’ll be going to the movies for opening day of the “Zookeeper” at Rockville Regal theater. The time will be around 2 p.m. (subject to the theater’s schedule). On July 15, we’ll be meeting up for bowling from 1:30-3:30 p.m. at Bowl 300, Shady Grove Road. More info to come!

Sailfish start the season with a win!

Congrats to our swimmers and coaches on our first victory of the season on Saturday!! We defeated Rock Creek by a score of 472 to 307.  A shout out to Hannah Lindsey for breaking the RESC team record in 13-14 Girls 50 Back (which had been held by Katie Beckett since 2002), and for breaking the Rock Creek pool records in 50 Free, 50 Back, 50 Fly and 100 IM.  Congrats also to Beth Wright, Katie Wright, Hannah Lindsey and Haley Phillips for breaking the RESC team record in 14 & Under Girls 175 Free Relay, last set in 2009. The girls’ relay also broke the Rock Creek pool record!

A Meet absences

If your swimmer will not be able to compete in this Saturday’s A meet (a home meet against Wildwood Manor), please sign the Absence Sheet on the team bulletin board by this Wednesday. This is extremely important! If we don’t know that a swimmer will not make it, we put him/her on the entry sheet and then end up having empty lanes, losing points, and not including other swimmers who otherwise could have participated.  Thanks for your cooperation.

Planning for July Fourth Weekend

If you are NOT going to be around for the July 2 home meet against Olney Mill, which falls on the July Fourth weekend, please send Dana an e-mail (rescswim@gmail.com) at your earliest convenience.

The Pre-Team is back!

Our awesome Pre-Team is in the water! Full practice sessions start this week.  The Pre-Team session assignments are posted on the swim team bulletin board and have been e-mailed to parents.

B Meet at Old Georgetown

The sign-up sheet for Wednesday’s June 22) B meet at Old Georgetown is posted on the team bulletin board. Please note:  This meet starts at 5:30 p.m., a half-hour earlier than usual. RESC swimmers should be at Old Georgetown (9600 Fernwood Road, in Bethesda) by 4:45 p.m.

As a reminder, swimmers must sign up in advance for B meets. Sign-up sheets for B meet swimmers — and volunteers — are posted on the bulletin board each Sunday. The sign-up sheets remain posted until Tuesday evening. Coaches try to catch each swimmer at practices on Monday and Tuesday to sign them up, but, in the end, it is the swimmer’s responsibility to sign up for B meets. Younger swimmers should check with the coaches to see which events they should swim. Pre-Teamers do not swim in meets unless invited by a coach. At our first B meet, we were able to do “deck entries,” which are essentially write-ins at the start of the meet. We will not have the flexibility to do that in the remaining B meets.

Lock-In is June 25

The epic (I am not exaggerating) Swim and Dive Team sleepover at the pool will take place the night of Saturday, June 25. You have the option of sleeping over with us, or you can choose to leave at 11 p.m., when we lock the gates until morning. The sign-up sheet for lock-in is on the bulletin board; the permission form is below. Participants must bring the form to lock-in. Each family participating should bring a snack and two 2-liter beverages. In addition, we’re looking for someone to pick up 4 bags of ice, bring s’mores fixings, donate a fire pit, and make a Sunday morning doughnut run and drop-off. This is an exceptionally memorable and meaningful night for the kids … and for the parents! Please contact me ASAP (rescswim@gmail.com) if you can help.

Say ‘Cheese’

Photographs of our swimmers taken at meets and events are posted on our web site along with meet results (http://rescswimpool.org/category/swim-meet-results-pictures/).

We also can put to work middle or high school students who want to earn SSL hours.

We still need shoppers

Thanks to the folks who answered the call to make a few Costco runs. We need more help. Our concessions folks work tirelessly to feed and fund-raise for the team, and make endless runs to every store in the D.C. metro area to stock the Regency Café for A and B meets. We need to give them a little help by doing a little shopping for them. Please contact me if you can help out these exceptionally hardworking volunteers.

Pep rallies

We are looking for several volunteers to run pep rallies this summer. Each Friday at 6 p.m. the Swim & Dive Team convenes on the blacktop for team announcements, pizza, and a craft/activity in a pre-selected theme. We need a few parents to take the lead on planning the craft portion of a pep rally. This generally entails a single run to a craft store for supplies. This is a pretty easy job that brings gigantic rewards as the kids are sporting your craft to the meet the next day (think flags, hats, etc.). Please contact Audrey Phillips at phillipsfam51@verizon.net.

One more officials clinic

The very last MCSL stroke and turn clinic is coming up.  Again, many thanks to those parents who got certified – you rock! The clinic is for Stroke and Turn training only and will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 21 at the Martin Luther King Swim Center, 1201 Jackson Road in Silver Spring.

Team swim suits

If you missed Capital Sport and Swim on the blacktop after Time Trials and still need a team suit, please contact CSS or stop by their store in Kensington. Our new team suit is Tyr Aurora (red).

Gear orders

There is still time to order RESC gear. The gear catalog is on the bulletin board and posted online at http://rescswimpool.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/2011-gear-catalog.pdf – the last page is an order form. E-mail me your form or drop it in the Swim Team folder in the pool office.  We have silicone and latex Regency swim caps available for sale – $12 and $5, respectively.  For those who pre-ordered but have not yet received your caps, I’ll have them with me when I’m at the pool and at Time Trials. For those who preordered and received your caps but have not yet paid, please leave your checks at the pool office or give them to me.

National Anthem performers

We still need National Anthem performers for our swim meets.  If your swimmer is interested in performing, please send me her/his name and type of performance, e.g., singing, instrument, etc.  We may hold auditions, depending on the number of interested artists, and will hold a lottery to assign performers to specific meets.

Thanks, parents!

Thanks so much to all of the parents who worked Time Trials last weekend — and that was every parent on deck!  As ever, you were great about jumping in and filling all of our positions.  It would be extremely helpful if you would please sign up for jobs in advance of the meets on the bulletin board or online at http://www.signupgenius.com/go/2011591.  We were a little late getting started on Saturday, partially because we were organizing our deck crew volunteers at the last minute.  Thanks!

While I have your attention… please be sure to read these e-mail messages all the way through.  These are our primary, and sometimes only, way to keep you apprised of what’s going on.  It’s all important!  Even the 105th reminder about officials clinics.

First B meet is Wednesday

Our first B meet will be held tomorrow at Regency, vs. Cedarbrook.  Because some kids are still in school, we’ve moved up the start time for this meet to 5:30 p.m.  Regency swimmers will be in the pool for warm-ups at 4:30 p.m.

First A meet is Saturday

Our first A meet is Saturday, June 18, at Rock Creek. The entry sheet showing the swimmers who will be participating in the meet will be posted on the bulletin board at the pool on Thursday. Please be sure your swimmer signs the absence sheet on the bulletin board by tomorrow, Wednesday, if they cannot take part in the meet. This holds true all season: We must know who will be absent in advance of the meet in order to finalize our roster.   On Saturday, the caravan to Rock Creek will leave Regency at 7:40 a.m.  All swimmers must be at Rock Creek by 8:10 a.m.

The Pre-Team is back

Our awesome and enormous pre-team is starting up on Friday, June 17.  The pre-team session assignments have been e-mailed to all Pre-Team parents and are being posted on the Swim Team’s bulletin board at the pool.

We need shoppers …

Want to shop with someone else’s money?!  Our concessions folks, who work tirelessly to feed and fund-raise for the team, need shoppers to make Costco runs (at your convenience).  We know you’re going anyway… we all do…  Please contact me if you can help out these exceptionally hard-working volunteers.

… and pep rally volunteers

We are looking for several volunteers to run pep rallies this summer.  Each Friday at 6 p.m., the Swim & Dive Team convenes on the blacktop for team announcements, pizza, and a craft/activity in a pre-selected theme.  We need a few parents to take the lead on planning the craft portion of a pep rally.  This generally entails a single run to a craft store for supplies.  This is a pretty easy job that brings gigantic rewards as the kids are sporting your craft to the meets that weekend (think flags, hats, etc.).  Please contact Audrey Phillips at phillipsfam51@verizon.net.

Our first pep rally is Friday at 6 p.m.

Morning practices begin Friday

We begin the morning practice schedule on Friday, June 17.  As usual, there will be no afternoon practice on Friday. For the full practice schedule, click on Practice Schedule under the Swim Team tab.

One more officials clinic

The very last MCSL stroke and turn clinic is coming up.  Again, many thanks to those parents who got certified — you rock!  It was great to see our newbies and experienced officials paired up at Time Trials.

**Stroke and Turn Only Clinic: 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 21, at the Martin Luther King Swim Center

Team swim suits

If you missed Capital Sport and Swim on the blacktop after Time Trials and still need a team suit, please contact CSS or stop by their store in Kensington.  Our new team suit is Tyr Aurora (red).

Gear orders still being accepted

There is still time to order gear!  The gear catalog is on the bulletin board and posted online at http://rescswimpool.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/2011-gear-catalog.pdf – the last page is an order form. Practices start today!

Check the practice schedules by clicking Practice Schedule, under the Swim Team tab.

Jason Blanken is returning for his fifth year as Regency’s head coach. Our own Erin O’Connor and Laurence Bloch are on the staff as assistant coaches. We also are pleased to introduce Travis Trimboli, our new assistant head coach, who brings a great deal of coaching, teaching, leadership and experience to our staff.  As a heads-up, we have a few coaching changes taking place this season. I’m delighted to announce that Jason recently was accepted into a wonderful graduate program in education. Jason’s masters program started a few weeks ago. This is great news for Jason -– but it does impact our coaching schedule a bit. Jason will be unavailable for Tuesday and Thursday afternoon practices until the end of June, and he will not be at B meets throughout the season. He will be coaching at all morning practices and all A meets. Assistant head coach Travis Trimboli will be joined by Erin and Laurence in running afternoon practices on Tuesdays and Thursdays in June and B meets all season in Jason’s absence. We have a tremendous coaching staff in place this year. The staff and I assure you that our swimmers will continue to receive top-notch coaching and personal attention.

Order gear now!

Last call for first-round orders!  The gear catalog is online at http://rescswimpool.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/2011-gear-catalog.pdf ; the last page is an order form. E-mail me your form or drop it in the swim team folder in the pool office by Wednesday to get in on this order.

Parents meeting on Friday (June 3)

We’ll meet at 6:30 p.m. on the blacktop. We’ll introduce our coaching staff and cover any questions you might have about the Sailfish swim team. Please prepare for the meeting by reading the Swim Team Manual http://rescswimpool.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/2011-Swim-Team-Manual1.pdf, which will leave you informed and breathless with anticipation for the swim season.

Time Trials are Saturday, June 11

Time Trials, our all-Regency “meet” at which we get times on all of our swimmers in all of their strokes, takes place on Saturday, June 11. Warmup will begin at 8:30 a.m.; the meet will start at 9 a.m. All swimmers are expected to take part in Time Trials. Please let me or Jason know if your swimmer CANNOT make it.

Team swim suits have changed for 2011

Capital Sport and Swim will be on the blacktop immediately after Time Trials selling our new suit: the Tyr Aurora (in red, of course!).

Happy Summer!

Support your kids and be a Sailfish volunteer!

The Regency Estates Swim Team relies on our parent volunteers to make our season happen.  This is essentially an all-volunteer endeavor and all of our volunteers are parents.

You can choose from many volunteer opportunities – whether it’s flipping burgers, judging flip turns, timing races or readying ribbons for our swimmers.  You also can help with the social and other events that make our Swim Team experience so memorable and enjoyable for our kids.

Each family is expected, at a minimum, to work at each meet in which their child participates. In reality, we need all hands on deck throughout the season. Sometimes the thought of more “volunteering” is daunting, but being part of RESC’s parent “Deck Crew” is fun, social and worthwhile.  If you’re not sure how to jump in, our veteran volunteers and Swim Team rep Dana Stewart will be happy to get you started.

MEET VOLUNTEERS — At each meet, we need concessions support, timers, a ribbon writer, clerk of course, announcer, head timer, runner and more.  Signing up for any of these positions does not preclude you from enjoying the meet or watching your child swim.  We are all parents, and working together, we can accommodate both our need for volunteers and our need to cheer for our swimmers and our team!

In addition, at each meet we are required to provide certified officials -– a starter, stroke and turn judges, and a referee. These are the officials who ensure that swim strokes are legal, start the races, and make sure the meet runs smoothly.  As ever, all parents are encouraged to take the single, brief training session required to become certified.  The sessions are scheduled for June 6, 9, 13, and 25.  If you are interested, please let sign up and let Dana know! Her e-mail is rescswim@gmail.com.

SOCIAL VOLUNTEERS — In addition to the volunteers we need at meets, we also are looking

for a few good parents to help us with several other activities that make swim season so enjoyable for our children:

  • Organizing activities at a single pep rally, with the theme determined by the coaches
  • Arranging a bowling outing
  • Planning a “movie night”
  • Coordinating an outing to an amusement park
  • Scheduling a team breakfast

If you are interested in helping out with one or all of these social events, please contact Dana at rescswim@gmail.com.

We look forward to seeing you as part of the RESC Deck Crew!  Sign up and get on board!
